Another epistle from your favourite author
Monday night saw the Ladies B team win their first match against
Ravenscroft ladies B in a nail biting finish. At the request of the
opposition the match was played on courts 3,4 and 5 as the lines were
easier to see, but it did mean we all battled with fading light towards
the end.
The first pairing of Pauline and Karen won their first two matches
but lost to the third pair. Glenda and Fiona seemed to be playing well
when I looked across but were unable to sustain it and lost all
three sets. Which left the third pairing of Angela and me to try to save
the day. A combination of my annoying lobby things and Angela's
disguised shots down the tramlines enabled us to win our first two sets.
This was despite Glenda's and Fiona's very ill timed meander between the
courts at set point against us on a lengthy and nail biting tie
break against Ravenscroft's tricky number 2 pair. I wouldn't have
mentioned it but was told it must be included in the match report
by "he who must be obeyed" (step forward Mr Hewitt).
Our first and second pairs came off court simultaneously and told us
it was all down to us in the last set of the match. No pressure there
then. My racquet arm immediately
went into spasm from stress, but luckily Angela kept calm and we won 6-4
to win the match by the closest of margins.
So a close match played in good spirit followed by one of Pauline's
special match teas with home made scotch eggs and red onion with potato
salad. Very tasty, rounded off nicely by Karen's home made cake and
cornettos (especially welcome on a hot evening requiring liberal
applications of sun cream).
