Well the rain finally stopped, but the
match was played in very difficult conditions. A strong wind
combined with the very low sun shining on the damp courts made playing
from one end a bit of a lottery. Combine this with some at times
erratic play from our top team (missing their skipper, rested after no
games played), then it made for a tricky afternoon that ended with
considerable tension. Thankfully all worked out in our favour, and
we chalked our first win of the season over newly promoted
Broxbourne.
It was all looking good after round 1, with
Colin & Jerry comfortable winners, whilst Peter & David made heavy
weather of their opener, crawling over the finishing line in a champions
tie-break having squandered a one set advantage. Into round 2, and I
was cosily in the clubhouse chatting with the Barnet lads (who had already
seen off our C team), so I was rather concerned when Colin and Jerry
appeared and announced their straight sets defeat, including the first
bagel of the season. This meant that Peter and David had to win, as
on game difference for the match things looked decidedly bad if we were to
lose. And so, another set lead squandered, and we were into a match
deciding champions tiebreak. The tension in the clubhouse could be
cut with a knife, as all players observed proceedings from afar. We
finally clinched victory witha double fault, a disappointing end
from the visitors' perspective, but gratefully accepted from ours.
One suspects we made need to perform better
in coming matches............
